Why flip your mattress?
Rotating or flipping your mattresses regularly adds to the life of the mattress and it’s probably a requirement for staying within your product’s warranty criteria. Some people know or suspect they should rotate or turn their mattress, but they’re not sure how to do it.
How often is it necessary? What exactly should be done? These are some of the questions we hear from people who don’t understand the process. We’re always glad to help.
If you’re one of the many mattress owners (or almost owners) who aren’t sure how often to rotate or flip a mattress, why exactly it’s needed or how to turn it to begin with, we’re happy to give you some tips that will bring you more enjoyment out of your sleep investment.
Regularly Rotate or Flip a Mattress to Increase Longevity
To extend the life of your mattress, you should rotate or flip it regularly. Especially for the first few years, take care to rotate or turn your mattress every 2 to 3 months, but up to the first 2 or 3 months you should rotate or flip it every 2 weeks.
This will promote even wear and reduce impressions caused by your body weight. You’ll see a tremendous increase in your bed’s lifespan if you diligently do this single care practice.
Comply with the Manufacturer’s Warranty
Most mattress manufacturer’s warranties state that you must regularly rotate or flip your mattress to comply with the terms and conditions. Mattress makers want to make sure you’re taking proper care of the product and not subjecting it to extreme wear in certain spots, which would likely cause you to be uncomfortable during sleep and ask for a refund for your purchase.
Check your mattress warranty to see the specific requirements you must meet to keep your warranty valid.
Some Mattresses Need to Be Rotated and Others Must Be Flipped
If you have a single-sided mattress, you can’t flip it so you must rotate it at the suggested intervals already mentioned and you should do a 180-degree rotation each time. Double-sided mattresses should be flipped and rotated according to the manufacturer’s suggested method and schedule.
Keep in mind that double-sided mattresses can be heavy, so it may take 2 people to rotate and flip one. While rotating and flipping your mattress, you’ll want to make sure you handle it gently and place it properly on your bed frame so that it lies nicely, flat and centered (mattresses that are falling off the bed frame will likely get unattractive indentions on them that can also ruin the product).
