With 38 years in the bedding business we asked Mattress Merchants Director, Cheryl Hartley to share her top 4 Tips for Choosing the Right Mattress.
Save time, money and skip any arguments with your partner thanks to these insider tips from a mattress maven.
How to Choose the Right Mattress
Comfort is a very personal experience. Various cultures around the world might find comfort on a mat on the floor or a thin, hard mattress on platform. A sailor can swing peacefully in a hammock while an Inuit might be comfortable wrapped up in furs.
By those standards, in western cultures, we tend to prefer a softer sleeping surface raised off the floor. Having talked with thousands of customers over the past four decades we, being my husband Darryl and I, agree that there is no right or wrong in the choice. Hard, soft or somewhere in between, the only perfect mattress is the one that best suits your needs.
So, how can you be confident you’ve made the best choice when buying a new mattress?
It’s a relatively simple process but you do need to allow time to make your selection. Even at our discounted prices it’s not a purchase you want to make again for many years.
4 Tips for Choosing the Right Mattress
Here’s our 4 sure-fire ways to choose the right mattress, first time, everytime.
1. Shop with your Partner
If you share a bed with a partner, shop together. We sometimes have one partner drop in to our warehouse showroom to try out mattresses in the hope of saving time. But we hate to break it to you, this approach never works.
In almost every case a selection is made optimistically with the promise returning with a partner, just to sign off on the purchase. You can see where this is headed… when both return a completely different mattress is chosen and no time was saved.
2. Speak to a Mattress Expert
Make sure you’re taking to someone who really knows his or her product. Someone who has knowledge and can inform you though experience.
The right sales assistant will ask questions about your needs, sleep habits and what you expect from your perfect mattress. They should be there to guide you through selection process, not to sell the mattress they sleep on or the promotional one with the big ‘discount’. We’ll cover those “discount mattresses” another day.
3. Try Before You Buy
Next Get on the Bed. You can push and sit and bounce but only when you stretch out on a mattress and take the position you usually fall asleep in will you begin to gauge if it has the comfort and support you need. Another trait of a good sales assistant is they will ask you lots of questions.
4. Be Upfront About Your Criteria and Budget
To save your time and avoid confusion we need to know exactly what you’re looking for. It also really helps if you let us know your budget.
After all, we all have one that we don’t want to exceed. Mattress Merchant has an extensive range of over 50 style options at various price points, so we are confident of finding just the one for you.
What should you expect after your purchase?
Whether you’re shopping for a budget or premium mattress you deserve to be comfortable that you are getting value for your investment. Since the majority of our range is factory direct we look after any after sales queries in-store.
